An End of Life Doula is a non-medical person trained to care for someone holistically (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) at the end of life.
This isn’t a new skillset.
In fact, a hundred years ago, this was the way end-of-life was experienced. We’re helping to bring these skills back and make them better than ever before.
We give you a simple path, packed with everything you need to know, using your own life experiences, individuality, and empathetic heart to create a thriving business for yourself that gives you more freedom and purpose, and allows you to have an amazing impact within your community and beyond!
The International Doulagivers Institute, founded by Suzanne B. O’Brien RN, has been providing the highest level of education and certification for the End of Life Doula for over a decade.
Our Doulagiver training is akin to the birthing doula model: both help people transition to and from this world.
Facilitating this process requires education, training, and compassion. Our certified End of Life Doulas are a global community working as an adjunct to Hospice and providing care and guidance for patients and families at the end of life.
There has never been a greater need for these services than right now. Why?

AS THE NUMBER OF AGING INCREASES
THE NUMBER OF MEDICAL STAFF IS DECREASING
END-OF-LIFE DOULAS! THE NEW PROFESSION OF NON-MEDICAL HEALTHCARE.
Holistic practitioners are the future of end-of-life care.
Why do I feel this way?
Because people at the end-of-life want to…
Be at home
Be surrounded by the people and things they love and are familiar with
Have a connection with those who are caring for them
Know that someone is there to support their loved ones
And YOU can help make that a reality for them!
The best part… this is so much more than a job, it is a new way of life that is profoundly fulfilling for you, as well as the lives that you touch.
This is an opportunity to:
- Be of Service
- Find your true calling
- Align with your life’s purpose
- Start your own business
- Be your own boss
- Make a positive difference in the world
- And to enrich YOUR life
This is about reshaping end of life care for the future.
It’s because of these important reasons, EVERY person should have access to End of Life Doula services:
Because they provide… …More support …More knowledge and expertise …Higher quality of life …Less stress
…Continuity of care
That’s just to name a few.
But the best part, it’s the best way to support the end-of-life process for EVERYONE involved.
The patient, the caregivers, the family/loved ones – and even medical staff!
The Doulagivers Certified End of Life Doula program is the BEST way to learn these skills and serve your community.
When you say, “YES!”, you not only support the elderly and dying on a deeper level, but you also enrich and transform your life for the better as well!

Your DoulagiverInstructor
My name is Suzanne B. O’Brien, and I am a registered nurse who has worked most of my career in either Hospice (end-of-life care) and/or Oncology (cancer care).
I have had the honor and privilege to have personally worked at the bedside with over one thousand end-of-life patients and their families, from all different cultures, backgrounds, and nationalities.
In addition to being the creator and founder of Doulagivers Institute, I am also a founding member of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s (NHPCO) End of Life Doula Council, and a founding member and former Vice President of the National End of Life Doula Alliance (NEDA).
For over a decade now I have been training End-of-Life Doulas to help support and serve our vulnerable elder population.
I help incredibly passionate people (like you) become the best possible non-medical, holistic practitioner you can be so that you can help the people that need you most.
There has never been a greater need for this type of service than there is today.
So, how did Doulagivers become the premiere learning institution for End-of-Life Doulas in this emerging field?
In 2003, I became a registered nurse and noticed right away the lack of care and support our elder population was getting. I followed my calling to hospice and found that end of life was not going well for most.
Families did not know the first thing about how to care for someone at the end of life… yet that is what we expect them to do. The fear of death, the short amount of time I was at the bedside as a hospice nurse, and the late period that patients come on hospice care, all added up for extremely challenging end of life experiences.
So, I started creating trainings to help families learn the skills of how to care for their loved one at the end of life - before they ever needed it.
I used all my experience from the bedside of end-of-life patients and made the Doulagivers 3 Phases of End-of-Life Care Model - identifying the three phases of end-of-life and the interventions to use in each phase.
The results have been amazing!
We are a global family, unified in our humanity, and death is a universal experience for us all. Which led me to the next part of my journey…
Knowing that the end-of-life is a struggle even with medicine and medical care, I wanted to volunteer to help others in the world that may not have access to those resources.
In 2012, I went to Zimbabwe, Africa, on a volunteer Hospice mission. While there, I witnessed a lot of hardship and a startling lack of medical availability and a high end of life need. But I was absolutely floored by the community-based approach that the villagers would take towards end-of-life.
It was really powerful, and I was able to understand that even in the absence of high-tech equipment, unlimited pharmaceuticals, and doctors that specialized in every possible area imaginable… they were still able to provide a high quality of care.
Why?
Because death isn’t a medical experience. It is a human one.
This awareness changed everything for me.
When I returned home to the U.S., I decided to add what I had learned overseas to my years of experience working in this space and create a training that embodied the sense of community and holistic approach that I had witnessed abroad.
Since then, the number of doulas I have trained has skyrocketed, this movement has been gaining rapid momentum, and MOST importantly patients and their families have been expressing their deepest gratitude for having these services available to them.
That has led us to this moment in time where we have created the best way possible to teach these wonderful doulas and meet the crazy demand for them that keeps growing year after year.

We need professionals to answer this call so that our elder population can have these services available to them and so that everyone has the opportunity for their end of life to go well.
The demand for end of life doulas and alternative holistic practitioners is only going to grow and without compassionate, empathetic, and service-oriented people willing to step up, we won’t be able to match it.
If this is something you feel strongly about and have in your heart, I would love for you to join us in this mission.
This is your chance to take the Doulagivers training and start your personal journey towards makingthat dream a reality.
The door is open right now, but only until midnight ET on Sunday,September 25th.

In this program, I am going to teach you everything I know from my decades of experience working in the field and at the bedside of over a thousand end of life patients.
If you want to do this work, this program is invaluable. The wealth of information I am going to pass on to students cannot be found elsewhere.
This is a chance to make a living by creating a sense of fulfillment for yourself and by working as an expert in a field of care that most people are fearful of and don’t know the first thing about navigating.
A chance to be of your highest service and to play an important role in the lives of others.
Through this program, you will gain the knowledge and special skills to take one of THE most difficult times of our lives (we are all going to experience it) and help make it a lot better for everyone you work with who is going through it.
When you’ve taken this certification course, you will understand what the common needs of all dying persons are and how to facilitate meeting them in meaningful ways that have a profound impact for your clients.
You will intimately understand how to do the work needed in order to have a good death for the dying and their families.
There are many great trainings and wonderful trainers for End of Life Doulas out in the world.
The one thing that is important to note is that there can be several trainings with the title “End of Life Doula Training” and they can be entirely different curriculums, and usually are.
Picking an End of Life Doula training is a financial commitment and a time commitment, and all training programs have their own teaching styles, perspectives, and focal points.
What sets Doulagivers apart from other trainings?
The Doulagivers Certified End of Life Doula Training Program is a holistic medical training for the non-medical practitioner.
You will learn the top end of life disease processes and the most common medications used in end of life care.
Although you will never perform in a medical capacity, this knowledge and understanding proves to be invaluable to your role as an End of Life Doula.
This information will allow you to anticipate patients’ needs ahead of time and alert the hospice team to any/all changes in the patient’s condition allowing them to quickly adjust the medical care plan leading to optimal daily comfort for both the patient and their loved ones - and that ability is worth its weight in gold.
This program will prepare you to walk into a home in crisis and remain calm while being able to identify what phase of end of life the patient is in and exactly what interventions to recommend based on the specific disease process they are experiencing.
That is the Doulagivers Difference.
I am also excited to announce our brand-new student portal. We have completely redone our classroom to enhance your learning experience.
We are 100% committed to providing the highest level of education and certification for End-of-Life Doulas and we want all of our students to be equipped for incredible success - families need you!
This new model will create a totally interactive and immersive learning experience for you, while keeping you on track and providing all the support you need every step of the way.

“I could not have asked for a more thorough or heart-centered class. Honestly, there is nothing I would add or change. From the level of detail covered in the classes to the amount of extra support provided (the online classroom, Doulagivers support team, monthly conference calls, Facebook pages etc.) this class has more than prepared me to begin my end of life doula path and I feel so reassured that Doulagivers will be there with me every step of the way. Thank you Suzanne for being a fabulous teacher, a supportive presence, and for helping us to change lives one death at a time.”
Lucy Pilch
“I had taken another course but it was NOWHERE near what this was. I never felt prepared after the first one. This was so in-depth and Suzanne has such a wealth of knowledge and experience and is so open to sharing. I'm feeling prepared to start helping others now. Thank you so much!”
Laura Cantales
“I loved the pace of this course as it allowed me time to take in new information and process it before moving forward. The questions and answers were always stimulating and informative, and Suzanne's generosity with her time in thoughtfully answering every question was very much appreciated. Her openness and generosity of heart, sharing all her career experiences, made this course very enjoyable and memorable. The case studies were a very important part of the course work and I liked the variety of each case, and the different disease processes, since we may all one day, have that particular case. The dashboard was a little intimidating at first, but support was always available. I had trouble printing out the manual, but I know that I can reach out to do that successfully when I am ready with support. The highlight for me, though, was when Suzanne came to NY for a meet up. That was an amazing experience, and again I am so impressed with her high frequency vibration, which exudes love and connection. My life has been changed by the course in the best possible way.”

This course has been one of the most in-depth end of life education programs I ever experienced. Working in hospice for the past 6 years gave me a good foundation, but this training explained more than my Chaplaincy CPE units ever did. I believe all Chaplains should take advantage of this training because it gives you more tools to provide the support needed. Thank you Doulagivers!

This course & specifically Suzanne are wonderful!I was very excited to begin the course & had rather high expectations... and each session went so far above what I had anticipated. The content covers all areas of caregiving & gives amazing insight into the physical, emotional, psychological & spiritual aspects of the dying process from diagnosis to after death counseling. I wish EVERYONE would take this course. (It also is a great help in getting in touch with your own thought, feeling & beliefs... an added, unexpected bonus). Thank you, Suzanne & Doulagivers!!!
