The Four Seasons has no shortage of twists and turns.

The Netflix comedy series, which is based on the 1981 movie by the same name, follows three couples in a friend group as they all live with their own relationship issues and family hurdles. The show stars Tina Fey (Kate) and Will Forte (Jack) as one couple, Steve Carell (Nick) and Kerri Kenney-Silver (Anne) as the second and Colman Domingo (Danny) and Marco Calvani (Claude) as the third.

The three couples decide to dedicate one year to taking four trips together — one every season. However, the vacations take a turn after Anne and Nick's marriage deteriorates, and they separate.

Nick later surprises his friends when he introduces them to his new — and younger — girlfriend, Ginny (Erika Henningsen). The friends have to adjust to the situation and try to maintain friendships with both Nick and Anne.

How did The Four Seasons end?

Although The Four Seasons is a comedy, the ending takes a tragic turn.

After Nick and Anne announce their divorce, they agree on splitting up the rest of the vacations with their mutual friends. Nick brings his girlfriend, Ginny, on his respective trips, while Anne brings her boyfriend, Terry (Toby Huss).

During the (final) winter vacation at a ski resort, Anne joins Jack, Kate, Danny and Claude, while Nick and Ginny go on their own ski vacation with her group of friends. While they are on vacation, Nick dies in a car accident. The final episode follows the whole group — including Ginny — as they grieve and plan for his funeral.

However, things go awry when Kate cuts corners to try and save costs, which results in a near-disastrous setup. The funeral gets more convoluted when Anne refuses to let Ginny speak at the service, and Kate doesn't include any photos of Nick and Ginny in the ceremony.

Anne, who was married to Nick for 25 years, tries to give a eulogy but realizes that she didn't know who Nick truly was at the time of his death. Instead of finishing her speech, she hands the microphone to Claude, who recalls a dream he had about Nick becoming a butterfly.

After the funeral, the friends return to Nick and Anne's house, where Ginny confronts everyone about leaving her out of the funeral and disregarding Nick's wishes. Ginny storms out in the frigid weather, and Kate, Jack, Danny and Claude all show their remorse by spreading out to search for her.

Despite the friends scattering around the area to look for Ginny, Anne finds her sitting in her front yard and the two women have a heart-to-heart conversation about their respective relationships with Nick.

The series ends with the friends welcoming Ginny into their group and planning their next trip together. As they toast to Nick's life, Ginny reveals that she is pregnant with Nick's child.

What happens to Nick, Anne and Ginny?

Before Nick's death, he and Ginny are both adamant that they are each other's "soulmate."

Of course, Nick's friends and his ex-wife, Anne, all have their thoughts on the relationship and age gap and don't welcome Ginny with open arms.

After Nick dies, the group is still hesitant to treat Ginny as their equal. Anne refuses to let her be a part of the funeral in any manner, while Kate also purposely doesn't include any pictures of Ginny in the slideshow of Nick's life.

However, Ginny's dynamic with the group changes after she confronts all of them for their behavior and storms out of Anne's house after the funeral.

Anne finds Ginny sitting outside her home, and the two women connect for the first time. Anne apologizes for leaving her out of the funeral and explains that she was scared that Ginny and Nick's eight-month relationship was more significant than their 25-year marriage.

Meanwhile, Ginny explains that she wanted to speak at Nick's funeral because she felt partially responsible for his death, as the fatal car accident happened after they had argued.

Ginny also tells Anne the major bombshell that she's pregnant with Nick's child. Anne later relays the information to the rest of the group at dinner after Ginny doesn't take a whiskey shot while toasting to Nick.

Anne and Ginny put their differences aside and leave as friends.

What happens to Kate and Jack?

Throughout the series, Kate and Jack's marital woes are also front and center.

The couple, who are college sweethearts, are constantly bickering during the vacations. Their fighting escalates on the winter ski trip when Kate accuses Jack of cheating on her after she notices he changed his phone passcode.

Kate and Jack's relationship struggles continue to play out at Nick's funeral, when he suggests that she should stick to Nick's wishes and include Ginny in the service.

After the funeral, Kate and Jack go together to search for Ginny after she storms off. As part of their search efforts, they wind up on a frozen lake that suddenly cracks under Kate. She is forced to completely trust her husband as he pulls her out of the water and they roll off the frozen lake.

The emotional incident causes both of them to express their love for the other and their desire to make their marriage work. Kate even tells Jack that he's her "soulmate," which is significant because she previously scoffed at the notion.

What happens to Claude and Danny?

Danny and Claude are also not immune to issues within their marriage.

The couple, who are in an open relationship, struggle with balancing how to keep their marriage exciting while also acknowledging their age.

During their vacations, Claude and Danny fight over the latter's health, as he is dealing with a heart condition and recovering from surgery while struggling to accept his age and the fact that he's getting older.

Danny and Claude's relationship faces another hurdle when they find themselves grieving differently after Nick's death. Claude is trying to find hope in Nick's death by suggesting that he turned into a butterfly, while Danny is deeply saddened and wants to mourn his friend's death.

Similar to Kate and Jack, Danny and Claude also confront their issues while searching for Ginny after Nick's funeral. Danny expresses how he needs to feel sad about his friend's death before seeing anything positive coming out of it. Meanwhile, Claude explains that he grieves by trying to find meaning in the tragedy.

The conversation seems to send them on the right track, since Danny smiles after seeing a picture that Nick's daughter drew for him that shows a butterfly next to the word "Daddy."

Will there be a second season of The Four Seasons?

Season 2 of The Four Seasons has not been officially announced but the series, which premiered on May 1, quickly claimed the No. 1 spot for Netflix TV shows.

Tina Fey, who starred in and co-created The Four Seasons, told Variety on May 2 that she and her fellow creators were "going to start talking next week" about the possibility of a second season.

Tracey Wigfield, who also co-created the show, confirmed that if they were to do a second season, it would follow a similar four-season structure.

"I think the heart of our show is this group of friends, and obviously there will be a little bit of a change in that," Wigfield told the outlet. "There’s no Nick, and Ginny’s pulled in whatever way that she is. But I think I’m looking forward to the opportunity to look at these couples ... what is the next thing that you’re going through? And what are more things that kind of can throw your relationship for a loop in bad and good ways?"
